HS wrestling competes in Day 1 of Far East Tournament

The CAJ high school wrestling team competed in Day 1 of the Far East Wrestling Tournament at Osan Air Base in South Korea on Thursday.

CAJ's four wrestlers won a combined seven matches. SungWon (180 pounds) won four matches and Joe (115 pounds) won three matches. SungWon will compete for third place in his weight class on Friday, while Joe lost in the consolation semifinals and will compete for fifth place on Friday.

"We did have some disappointing losses today," coach Morris Yaegashi said. "Amon and Tai both were eliminated from the individual tournament after two matches. Joe lost a heartbreaker in the consolation semifinals in the final individual match of his career. I feel for him. I've been in those kind of matches, and you don't get over it for a long time."

Yaegashi added that SungWon "switched gears" in the afternoon and had two really good matches in the consolation bracket. SungWon is still alive in his bracket and will wrestle for third place on Friday.

Yaegashi said he hopes the Knights earn a matchup against MC Perry in the dual meet tournament so Joe can get a rematch against the opponent who beat him in the consolation semifinals.

Below are the individual weight class tournament results for the high school:
115- Joe wins first round, loses quarterfinals, wins consolation first round, wins consolation quarterfinals, loses consolation semifinals
135- Amon loses first round, loses consolation first round
141- Tai loses first round, loses consolation first round
180- SungWon wins first round, loses quarterfinals, wins consolation first round, wins consolation quarterfinals, wins consolation semifinals

On Friday, teams will wrap up the individual championships. In the second half of the day, CAJ will start the dual meet tournament.
