HS boys' basketball wins once and loses once at Zama

The high school boys' basketball teams played at Zama on Tuesday night. Varsity won 61-52 and JV lost 55-27.

Varsity found its groove offensively after struggling a bit in its win against St. Maur on Saturday.

"It was a half-court game, with not much playing in transition at all," coach Steve Hall said. "We executed our offensive sets well and got many good shots, especially with post-ups."

The Knights were led in scoring by Koji (16 points), Kyle (15 points), Ty (14 points) and Enosh (11 points).

Coach Charles Smoker had this to say about the JV game:

"We shot very well in practice, we seemed physically and mentally ready and we had plenty of time to warm up, so things looked bright. But unfortunately, we couldn't buy a basket in the first quarter. We were trying and ran our plays decently, but we just couldn't score.

Our second quarter was better as we scored seven points. But we were down 25-7 at the half and dug ourselves into a big hole. The third quarter was our best quarter, as we hit for 14 points and almost chipped away their lead to 12 points. Yet it wasn't enough to dig ourselves out of our pit.

HoJeong got injured in the first half, so that was a big loss for us. He didn't play after that. He may be out a few days, so let's hope and pray he can recover soon because this is our last week of the season. Let's be thankful we could play today, be thankful for our team and be thankful for life."

JV was led in scoring by Satvik (11 points) and Lukas (nine points).

Varsity's league record is now 8-2, and JV has a 1-9 league record. Both the varsity and JV teams will play on Thursday at St. Mary's.
