HS wrestling defeats Zama 25-23

The high school wrestling team competed in a dual meet against Zama at Yokota on Wednesday. CAJ was able to win 25-23 to bring its season record to 1-1 in dual meets.

The Knights and Trojans had five head-to-head matchups on Wednesday night. CAJ won two matches by pin and also received points due to the Trojans forfeiting the 108-, 148- and 168-pound weight classes against the Knights.

Below are the individual weight class match results against Zama:
108, 148 and 168- Forfeit wins
115- Joe wins by pin
122- Natasha wins by pin
129- Theodore loses by technical fall
135- Jane loses by technical fall
141- Tai loses by pin

Coach Morris Yaegashi said he was especially pleased with Natasha's key win, which came in her first official varsity match.

"Our wrestlers stepped onto the mat with confidence," Yaegashi said. "Some are still nervous, but this was still our second official competition. We have next week and the week after that lined up, so I think as we get more experience and match time under our belts, we'll figure out how to become more relaxed and confident. Overall, I think it was a pretty good showing for us."

CAJ also had a few exhibition matches against Yokota. Jordan (108) pinned his opponent, Natasha (122) was pinned and Sung Won (158) pinned his opponent.

The next match for the high school wrestlers will be next Saturday at CAJ for the CAJ Wrestling Invite. On that same day, the middle school wrestling team will wrestle at St. Mary's.
