Growing in Grace & Truth:
Insights from Lois Seely, Art Department

Ps. 139:14 I will praise You; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made:
Marvelous are Your works; and that my soul knows very well.

God, as the ultimate Creator has made us in His own image, with the desire and ability to create. As we see God’s love for us and His truth through the world He has made, we can grow in grace and truth as people and artists. We are able to show that truth, create beauty, find meaning, tell stories, bless others, and worship God through our art. We all have something to contribute.

Art is a powerful way to reach a child’s mind and heart.

As we teach the basics of art with things like line, color, shape, texture, balance, it is fascinating to watch the kids figure out how to use these concepts in their weekly projects and have fun with the process. Each year they become more skilled in their techniques and unique ways of expressing themselves. Even in the earliest classes, it is amazing to watch how kids can express their feelings and thoughts through their drawings, paintings, and sculptures.

In May, we hosted a school wide Theme Art Contest.  Students were asked to submit artwork illustrating the 2016-17 theme, “Growing in Grace & Truth”.   Prizes were awarded to the top three entries.

It makes me happy to walk the halls of the school and see all the varied art work displayed, and from what others tell me, they are blessed by the art, too. We get a glimpse into the various personalities and ideas of the students; a progression of their skills as they get older.
