1/2 cup warm water (80 ̊F/27 ̊C)
1/4 cup shortening
1 egg
1/3 cup sugar
1 tsp salt
2/3 tsp vanilla
7 to 9 pods of cardamon, crushed
3 scant cups bread flour
2/3 tsp yeast
- •Filling•
about 1 1/2 Tbsp melted butter (no salt type)
1 tsp cinnamon
2 Tbsp granulated sugar
1/3 cup chopped pecans or walnuts
- •Icing•
1/2 cup powdered sugar
about 1 Tbsp cream
2 drops vanilla
Directions
Add the first group of ingredients, in the order listed, to the bread pan. Select the dough program of the bread machine which includes mixing, kneading and the first rise. Shortly before the first rise is over, prepare bread board, rolling pin, and filling. Remove dough from bread pan and roll out on a lightly floured bread board. Make one large oval. Spread the melted butter over the dough then sprinkle the cinnamon, sugar and nuts. Fold the dough from each side into the middle, so that the cinnamon sprinkles are inside, then place seam-side down on a lightly greased baking sheet. Using kitchen scissors, make cuts 3/4's of the way through the dough towards the center. The cuts should be about 2 cm. apart. Turn each cut section so that the cinnamon filling is face up. Cover with a cloth and let rise in a warm place for about 45 minutes. Bake at 425 ̊F until the loaf is medium brown, about 35 minutes. Cool in the pan then spread on the icing.
