Missionary School Distinctives
CAJ has been and continues to be a distinctive missionary school[edit]
According to Board Policy B1, "The purpose of CAJ is the establishment of a private school in Japan to provide a Christ-centered education, primarily for the children of Christian missionaries and also for others who desire a Christ-centered education for their children" (see also Act of Endowment, Constitution).
This purpose is reflected in a variety of ways, including:
- Admission priority for missionary families (Board Policy 2.3.1).
- Preferential financial assistance including pre-approved discounts for many missions (Board Policy 2.7.11).
- Curriculum and school services designed to make it easier for missionaries to take home assignments, allowing students to smoothly transition back and forth (Board Policy 2.4).
- Full time mission hire staff have their jobs (the contract, not the exact assignment) at CAJ protected while on home assignment. Leave is available for activities required by the staff person's mission (Board Policy 2.2.12).
- CAJ's Support Team offers more services for students with special needs than most international schools, and missionary families get special consideration for services, accommodations, and exceptions.
- Governance - most positions on the board are at the discretion of the founding missions (Board Policy 4.9). In addition, mission organizations are provided opportunities to provide input on school policies, changes and issues.
- School Support Services provides additional options for missionary families beyond our fixed location day school.
- Non-school facility rental policies give priority to mission groups (Board Policy 2.7.13.1).
