Supplemental Compensation Package for Staff Raising Additional Compensation Through JCAA[edit]
Categories of Staff[edit]
- Single
- Couple — Both spouses are employed at CAJ full-time, or at least 1.5 FTE (full-time equivalent) between them.
- Married, Primary Wage Earner — The main wage earner is a CAJ staff member, and the other spouse generates a gross income of less than half the support package ceiling for the pertinent category.
- Married, not Primary Wage Earner — One spouse is a CAJ staff member, and the other spouse generates a gross income of half or more of the support package ceiling for the pertinent category.
- Single Parent — One parent with dependent children.
Components of Support Package[edit]
The basic support package = salary equivalent + housing + child allowance. The amount listed does not include length of service and college tuition allowance, since they vary from person to person and from year to year.
- Salary — The salary figure is intended to cover personal salary, utilities, vehicle, furniture, major appliances, medical, retirement, taxes, travel round-trip to North America once every four years, and relocation expenses.
- Housing
- This is calculated separately so it can be more readily adjusted.
- Couples, single parents, and married staff whose spouses make less than half the support package ceiling may raise the full housing benefit.
- Married staff whose spouses make half or more of the support package ceiling may raise half the housing benefit.
Child Allowance[edit]
- This is calculated separately so it can be more readily adjusted.
- Couples, single parents, and married staff whose spouses make less than half the support package ceiling may raise the full child allowance.
- Married staff whose spouses make half or more the support package ceiling may raise half the children’s allowance.
- The child allowance continues four years post-high school, as long as the child is a dependent, whether or not the child attends college.
Length of Service Allowance[edit]
- The length of service allowance accumulates by individual staff member and is not affected by marital status or number of dependents.
- Calculations on length of service are based on employment of half-time or more.
College Tuition Allowance[edit]
- Couples (at least 1.5 FTE) and single parents with children attending college may raise an additional ¥40,000 per month above the child allowance for college expenses, for a total of 48 months for each child under age 25.
- Married staff whose spouses are not employed at CAJ may raise an additional ¥20,000 per month above the child allowance for college expenses for a total of 48 months for each child under age 25.
Additional Sources of Income[edit]
There are not limits on the amount which a staff member may generate from other sources: moonlighting, gifts, interest income, etc. However, certain visa restrictions may apply.
Reimbursement for Fund-Raising Expenses[edit]
- CAJ staff may take a one-time advance of up to ¥50,000 to be used for initial fund-raising expenses (mileage, meals, lodging, and correspondence with supporters). Reimbursement rates will be set by the CAJ Board.
- Advanced expenses funds will be repaid from the first support funds raised by the JCAA fund-raiser before receiving additional compensation. Should funds raised be inadequate to cover the advance, staff will not be responsible to pay back the advance personally.
Support-Raising Through Japan Christian Academy Association[edit]
Compensation paid by CAJ to staff is generally insufficient to provide an adequate living allowance for Japan. For non-mission-supplied staff, CAJ has a relationship with Japan Christian Academy Association (JCAA) in the USA for obtaining grants to fund additional compensation. To receive this additional compensation, CAJ staff must raise funds for JCAA.
Employment Agreement[edit]
CAJ staff participating in the JCAA grant program will sign an employment agreement which allows for additional compensation as determined by the CAJ Board. Compensation will be based on:
- Staff category
- Housing
- Number of children
- Length of service
- College tuition need
Compensation limits are determined by comparison to that paid by missions represented on the CAJ Board. Compensation for JCAA fundraisers will be paid in monthly increments of ¥30,000 in addition to their base pay, as pledges and actual gift information becomes available. The level of additional pay will be adjusted every six months. It may not exceed the maximum amount authorized.
Fund-Raising Agreement[edit]
CAJ staff participating in the JCAA grant program must raise financial support for JCAA. Support-raising efforts may begin after approval of employment by CAJ and signing of a Fund-raising Agreement with JCAA. All funds raised by the staff member will belong to JCAA, and the staff member must comply with all of JCAA’s policies and procedures.
- Advanced expense funds will be repaid from the first support funds raised by the JCAA fund-raiser before receiving additional compensation. Should funds raised be inadequate to cover the advance, staff will not be responsible to pay back the advance personally. Subsequently, CAJ staff may be reimbursed for fund-raising expenses, provided sufficient funds raised by the staff member have been received from JCAA.
Accounting of Funds[edit]
CAJ will maintain a record of funds raised for JCAA by the staff member, as well as compensation and expenses paid. Regular reports will be provided to the staff member, who will not have any ownership or right to balances reflected in the JCAA account.
Account Balances[edit]
In the event that a staff member leaves employment with CAJ, and the account maintained by CAJ has a black balance, the excess amount will be used for staff compensation, in accordance with JCAA grant requirements.
