Elementary Students Learning How to Be “Good and Faithful Servants”

CAJ wants all its students to be good and faithful students. But the school also wants its students to be good and faithful
servants.
This is the distinction elementary principal Jean Hino had in mind when she started the Good and Faithful Servants program this fall in the CAJ elementary division.
“We want everyone to be good and faithful students, but being a good and faithful servant is a step above that.”
“At the first elementary chapel, I told the students that we want everyone to be good and faithful students, but being a good and faithful servant is a step above that,” Hino said. “It’s doing something for someone else without bragging or boasting, and without being asked to do it.”
The Good and Faithful Servants program relies on nominations from staff members who “catch students in the act” of service and report it on a Google Form. Each month, Hino sorts through these nominations and selects one winner from each grade. The winners receive a certificate and a shout-out on the weekly Elementary News broadcast. They also have their picture displayed in the elementary hallway.
Hino says Good and Faithful Servants was inspired by the Wall of Honor program in CAJ’s middle school. That program, which has been going for more than 20 years, acknowledges students who display a variety of positive character traits, including service.
One main goal for these programs is to create a culture at CAJ where students are serving others with the goal of emulating Christ’s character, rather than selfish reasons.
Hino adds, “Hopefully it’s going to inspire students to do more for other people, and not just for the recognition, but because they want to be good and faithful servants.”
