Every November, CAJ’s Parallel program hosts its much-anticipated Sports Day. Held on the CAJ campus, the event brings together homeschooled students of all ages for a day filled with athletic activities, friendly competition, and laughter.
The morning kicked off with a range of sports and challenges, from badminton to a creatively designed obstacle course in the mini gym. But the highlight for many students this year was a special rugby session led by Deryck Thomas—a Fijian rugby professional who played in Japan for 14 years and is also a CAJ parent.
"One of the great benefits of Parallel Sports Day is giving homeschooled students opportunities they might not otherwise have."
With the help of a few of his own children, Thomas introduced elementary and middle school students to the fundamentals of rugby. His approachable style and passion for the sport made a big impression.
“My son especially enjoyed learning about rugby from the kind professional rugby player,” one parent shared. “We wish there were more opportunities to learn about rugby!”
The afternoon continued with high-energy family games and relays in the gym, capping off a day that was as entertaining as it was active.
Parallel assistant Debbie May emphasized the event’s relaxed and inclusive atmosphere. “Some of our students also attend Japanese schools, where sports days tend to be more formal. This is a chance for them to just have fun, try new things, and connect with others.”
And connect they did. Ms. May noted that new friendships blossomed throughout the day—a key goal of the event.
“One of the great benefits of Parallel Sports Day is giving homeschooled students opportunities they might not otherwise have,” she said. “It’s not just about the games—it’s about shared experiences, learning together, and building community.”
