This is the first installment of
At CAJ, a monthly post from the headmaster. As headmaster I used to write regularly for the
PTA sponsored
Knight Sounds, but when we restructured that publication to make it PTA-exclusive, we created a gap where I no longer had a vehicle to communicate regularly about things of interest to the entire school.
In my years of experience as a businessman, educator, and administrator, I have found the greatest challenge facing organizations and communities to be effective communication. I am currently examining research for a graduate class that shows that the barriers to effective, clear communication are many and complicated. And, miscommunication happens not only when something is not said or written well, but because hearing (or reading or seeing) and understanding are very different things. Hearing and seeing are physiological, but the understanding is psychological.
Over the years CAJ has dramatically increased the amount of what we communicate to parents and students, but it is time now to examine what is or is not being understood. Irish author George Bernard Shaw said about communication: “The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place.”
This year we will be closely examining all types of communication at CAJ and developing an overall communication plan to guide our next steps. We already have a lot of feedback from parents and students to start the process. We know, for example, that many appreciate our multiple levels and sources of electronic information (e-mail, website, online grades and calendars) that are available when an individual is ready to go look for it. Others say there is too much information, and they struggle to know what is most important. Some of you appreciate the many different ways to provide feedback to the school, others prefer fewer surveys or don’t know what happens to the feedback you provide. Some believe we do too much translation, others not enough.*

- In response to the discussion about English use and translation we have clarified our Communicating With CAJ in English policy as well as continued exploration of English Use On Campus. Both of these policies will be further examined as part of our evolving communication strategy.
このたび、“At CAJ”（ブログ）に第一回目のメッセージを書かせて頂きます。
これまでは、PTA後援によって発行されている“Knight Sounds”の紙面で、学校長からのメッセージを定期的に掲載していましたが、現在は、PTA関連の記事を中心に再構成されることになり、学校全体についての校長のメッセージを掲載す
る場がなくなりました。そこで、この”At CAJ“を通して、毎月、本校に関する様々な事を皆さんへ発信していきたいと思っています。
わたしは、ビジネスマンとして、また、教育者、管理職者として長年経験を積んできましたが、組織やコミュニティーの中で効果的なコミュニケーションがなされるために大きなチャレンジを経験してきました。現在、自身の修士課程でこのテーマを研究していますが、的確なコミュニケーションを妨げる要因は複雑で多様であることがわかります。
ミスコミュニケーションは、ただ単に、言わなかったとか、正確に書かれていないという理由だけでおこるのではなく、『聞く、読む、見る』と、『理解する』ことは、まったく違うものだという理由からも起こりうるのです。なぜなら、『聞く、読む、見る、』等は生理的なことがらで、『理解する』は心理的なことがらだからです。
ここ数年の間にCAJが親や生徒ととるコミュニケーションの量は、劇的に増えてきました。今こそ、何がよく理解され、何が理解されていないかを吟味することが必要な時です。
アイルランド人の著者ジョージ・バーナード・ショーは、「コミュニケーションの最大の問題の一つは、それができているという幻想にある。」と述べています。
今年、私達はCAJのコミュニケーションの現状を吟味しながら、次のステップへと向上する為に、全体的なコミュニケーションの方法を検討しています。このプロセスに対して、すでに多くの保護者や生徒達から意見をいただきました。例えば、Eメール、ウェブページ、オンラインの成績表、スクールカレンダー等、様々な情報を知りたいときにインターネットを通して知る事ができることを評価してくださっています。しかし、ある方々からは、情報が多すぎて優先順位がわからないという意見もありました。現状把握のための様々なアンケートが行われる事に感謝している方もいれば、逆にアンケートが多すぎると思われたり、アンケートで答えた事がどのように反映されているのか分からず疑問を感じる方もいます。また翻訳される文書の量が多すぎると思われる方もいれば、少ないと思われる方もいます。
このようなご意見や、さらにCAJのより良いコミュニケーションのためにアイディアがありましたら、この計画を進め導いているマイケル エッセンバーグや、私、ブライアン バンダーハックの方まで、ご連絡ください。

英語の使用と翻訳に関するディスカッションにおいて、CAJでの英語のコミュニケーションポリシーCommunicating With CAJ in Englishを明確にすると同時に、CAJキャンパス内での英語の使用ポリシーEnglish Use On Campusについて引き続き吟味します。我々のコミュニケーション向上のためにも、このふたつのポリシーを検討していきます。
