私たちの土台の上に築く

CAJにおける私たちの行動規範の元となるのは、信仰です。現代社会で話題となっている人種差別、不当な抑圧、その他あらゆる不正に対してどう対処すべきかを考えるとき、私たちは信仰に立ち返ります。その上で、生徒たちがこれらの問題に適切に対処していくにはどう教育すれば良いかを模索します。彼らがこのキャンパス内にいる時も、また卒業した後も同じです。
その際、原則を基本に、そして原則を起点にして考えることは、全ての生徒に有益であると私たちは信じます。彼らは公平に学ぶ機会を得て、多様性を重んじ、思いやりを実践します。現在においても将来においても、大切な課題があれば率先して声を上げる生徒を育てることにつながります。課題は時によって変化するでしょう。しかし、自分も他人も神様の似姿に造られ、神様に深く愛されていることを理解しているなら、その生徒は成長し、才能を伸ばしていけます。正義、尊敬、誠実、忍耐、愛（またその他大切な原則も含め） の原則を学び、実践し、適用するなら、その生徒は伸びます。神様と人々に仕え、日本と世界に良い影響を与える力を得るのです。
私たちのヴィジョンが「日本と世界でキリストに仕える生徒を育成する」とうたっているのであるならば、どう育成するのか、私たち自身が明確でなければなりません。そのために学校の指導者も教職員も、皆が学校の根幹となる声明文に正面から向き合い、それがヴィジョンを達成する手段をどう伝えているか詳細に検証してきました。この数年間、ミッションステイトメントを見直し、いかなる状況にも適応する価値観に修正しました。神が全てを創られた真の創造主であること、その神が人をご自身に似せて創られたこと、そして私たち人間は、コミュニティーに生きるものとして創られていることを理解する。そのときに、私たちは、誠実で、他人を重んじ、互いに協力する道を考案し、実行する者になるのです。
生徒を育成するとは、生徒自身がここは安全である、守られていると感じる環境を整えることが含まれます。また、彼らが自分のことと他人のことを理解できる者に教育することでもあります。そのために、CAJには堅固で適切な児童保護規定があります。この規定は、コーディネーターが教職員向けのトレーニングを絶えず行うことで、実践されています。また、CAJでは、社会性と感情の学習というカリキュラムを導入しています。これには小学生向けの、「他人と感情を共有する」ことを教えていく内容も含まれています。聖書に基づく枠組みの中、安全な環境で、生徒たちは自分と周りの人々を理解することを学びます。
21世紀の世界に出て行ってそこで仕える生徒を育成するには、彼らに、仕える世界を理解するよう教える必要があります。このために、私たちは絶えずカリキュラムを見直しています。21世紀で学び、生きていく生徒の必要に合った内容を提供するため、カリキュラムにコースを加えたり、内容を最新のものに更新したりしています。文献の種類や学ぶ内容の選択肢を増やして、生徒たちの思考を伸ばしつつ、興味をそそる課題を与え続ける手段をいつも模索しています。
生徒を育成するなら、育成する側の教師も、育成される必要があります。「Teaching for Transformation」という方法論を導入しトレーニングを続けています。これは聖書の観念をカリキュラムに当てはめるもので、正義、奉仕、創造性と管理能力などの原則を実践的な方法で教師たちが学ぶために行われています。また、人種差別や多様性といった問題を意識的に学んでいく機会も提供しています。
いくつかの変革を実現するには時間が必要です。また、変革を支援していくためにも、学校の時間割を柔軟にしていくことが必要でした。ブロック制を導入することで、生徒たちは議論する時間を多く持てるようになりました。異なったスタイルの指導を受けることが可能になり、ワークショプを取り入れたり、多様な選択肢を持てるようになったりしました。またクラブ活動や選択科目が増えたので、個人の興味や才能を生かす機会が増大しました。
このようにさまざまな変革を実行しましたが、それは何か特定の問題を解決する意図があったわけではありません。しかし、効果的な方針・施策を導入することで、全ての生徒がその恩恵を受けられています。彼らがこれからの社会を変えていく人になるために、成長し学んでいる姿を見ることができているのは確かです。
Building on Our Foundation

Our beliefs provide the foundation for everything we do at CAJ. When we explore how we respond to important current issues like racism, oppression, or any sort of injustice in the world, we go back to our core beliefs as we seek the appropriate ways to equip our students to face these issues -- while they are here on campus, as well as after they leave us.
We believe in principle-based initiatives that benefit all students, provide equity for learning, help students to value diversity and practice empathy, and that foster attitudes that will help our students address the important issues they face in the world today and in the future. Issues may change or evolve, but as students learn to know themselves and others as dearly loved image-bearers of God; as they learn, practice, and apply principles such as justice, respect, integrity, persistence, and love (among other important principles) they will grow and develop as individuals. They will also be equipped to serve God and others, making a positive impact on Japan and the world.
If our vision is "to equip students to serve Japan and the world for Christ" we must be clear about how we equip them. As school leaders and staff members, we have been taking a close look at our core statements and how they inform the way we reach our vision. Over the past few years, we have crafted a mission statement and revised our core values to be applicable to many situations. Understanding that God is the author of all truth; that he created humans in his image; and that he designed us for community helps us devise and implement honest, respectful and collaborative practices.
If we are to have well-equipped students, we want them to be safe, protected, and able to understand themselves and others. To this end, we have a strong and applicable Child Protection and Safety Policy with ongoing training in it for our staff, led by a designated Child Safety Coordinator. We also have initiated a practical curriculum of Social and Emotional Learning, including an emphasis on empathy in our younger grades. Students learn to understand themselves and others in a safe environment, through a biblically sound framework.
If we are to equip students to serve in the world of the 21st Century, they need to understand the world they serve. To this end, we have an ongoing curriculum review in order to address the needs of students learning and living in the 21st Century. This has included adding courses to our curriculum and revising others that needed updating. We are seeking ways to provide for more student choice in the things they read and study, as well as providing topics that will stretch their minds and stimulate their thinking.
If we are to equip our students, those who do the equipping -- our teachers -- must also be equipped. We have ongoing training in "Teaching for Transformation", a methodology designed for applying a biblical perspective to curriculum, allowing for practical application of principles that include justice, service, creativity, and stewardship. We have also provided opportunities for staff to grow in awareness about issues including racism and diversity.
We needed time in our schedule for many of the changes we were making, as well as flexible structures in place to accommodate and support all we are doing. Block scheduling has allowed more time for discussions and different styles of instructions, incorporating workshops and increasing student choices. We have also been able to add clubs and electives, allowing for individual interest development and opportunities to exercise individual talents.
Though many of the recent changes were not designed to address one particular issue, we have seen how applying current, effective policies and practices benefits all students and allows them to grow and learn in the ways that help them to be change-makers in society.
人種差別問題への取り組み

新しい校舎の建築工事がやっと始まりました。ここに至るまでの長い道のりを振り返ると、感謝とともに感動すら覚えます。「建てる」ということについてしばしば考えされているので、今年のブログは「建て上げる」をテーマにしたいと思います。学校という一つのコミュニティーにおいて、強い体、柔軟な精神、鋭い感性などを形成することは、堅固な基礎づくりとなります。そのなかにあって、私たちが学び続け成長し続けている分野に、多様性、人種、そして公平への理解があります。これらの課題に対して、学校の立場を明確にすることは大切です。ですからぜひ、このブログを読み進めて、これらの大切な課題について理解を深めてください。ここで述べられていることを具体的にどう実践しているか、今後のブログでご紹介していきたいと願っています。

CAJの学校長の立場にある者として、組織を代表して語ることに戸惑いを感じることがあります。CAJは、宣教団によって設立された、日本の地にある学校であり、アメリカの評価団体から評価を受けており、日本文化の影響を色濃く受けたたくさんの外国人の生徒が通う学校です。ですから、どの課題を取り上げて強調し、それに対してどういう立場であるかを明確にすることが時に難しいのが現実です。先日、CAJのことを心底から気遣っている卒業生から連絡があり、人種と人種差別に関してCAJの立場について尋ねられました。CAJはすでに多くの国の生徒が集っている学校なので、このような話題は学校外のことであると、私たちは思っていたのではないでしょうか。それは間違いでした。私たちは聴く耳を持ち、学ぶべきでした。そして今、人種差別という罪から逃れられる人は一人もいないと気づかされています。この機会を通じて、私自身、過去と現在、そして内側をよく見つめ直し、私たちは学校として、どのようにしたら和解と希望をもたらすことができるかを伝えたいと感じました。
過去何世紀にも渡って、キリスト教という組織の中には、人種差別とそれによる分断という悲劇が存在したことは事実であり、私たちはそれを悔やみ哀しんでいます。福音を分かち合いたいという願望は、しばしば、生きた神の言葉そのものを宣べ伝えることよりも、いつも間にか、自分たちの文化の中で解釈した神の言葉を分かち合うことに焦点が当てられていたことを認めます。全ての人への神の愛、神の完全なる義、神にある自由、という真の神の福音が伝えられるべきでした。世界宣教の働きの名の下に、時に自分たちの文化を押し付けたこと、時にそれが組織的な人種差別、抑圧、そして植民地化に繋がって行ったことを認めます。「正義を行い、慈しみを愛し、へりくだって神と共に歩むこと」（ミカ書6:8 新共同訳）を、私たちに向けられた神からの言葉と、私たちは真剣に受け止めていなかったときもあったのです。
CAJにおいて、私たちは真理を大切にします。たとえそのことが、私たちの内にあるいは、私たちの歴史の中に潜む悪を露わにすることを意味することであっても、私たちは真理を大切にします。私たちが言う真理とは、人種差別は悪であり、私たちは人種差別を弾劾する、ということです。「私たちは悔い改めます。キリスト者として、私たちは人種差別という悪、差別をもたらす暴力に立ち向かう者であったとは言い難い存在であったことを。人種差別の真の醜さを軽視し、目をそらし、このような不正を故意に継続する共犯者になってしまったことを悔い改めます。」（Redeemer Church)
私たちは多様な文化を受け入れている、と受動的に言うだけでは十分ではありません。能動的に平和を求め、公義を行い、癒しをもたらし変化を求めなければいけません。「日本と世界でキリストに仕える生徒を育成する」私たちは、それを行うべき立場に立っています。
人種、皮膚の色、言葉、性別に関わらず、全ての人が尊厳を保ちかつ尊敬を受けるに値するのは、私たち一人一人が神様ご自身に似せて造られたものだからです。そして、イエスさまの救いのみ業によって、私たちを分断させる壁は打ち砕かれています。パウロがガラテア人への手紙で伝えたように、「ユダヤ人もギリシヤ人もなく、奴隷も自由人もなく、男子も女子もありません。なぜなら、あなたがたはみな、キリスト・イエスにあって、一つだからです。」「あらゆる国民、部族、民族、国語」（黙示録7:9）から、数えきれないほどの大勢の人々が集い、イエス・キリストの御前に立って賛美をささげ、パウロの言葉が真に実現する時を私たちは待ち望んでいます。今の世の中は、神が望んでおられる世界とは食い違っていることを知りつつ、私たちは、「み国を来たらせたまえ」、「み心を地にもなさせたまえ」と祈ります。私たちが関わる場所すべてにあって、あらゆる人が受け入れられ、安心していられることを私たちは望みます。それが住む場所であっても、CAJのキャンパスであっても、東京の地、私たちの手が届くどこの世界であっても、です。
私たちはコミュニティーで生きるものとして造られていると信じます。だから、多様性を重んじます。私たちは互いに一緒にいるときに、神様の栄光をより良く映すと信じます。ですから、コミュニティーの一人ひとりがもたらす、それぞれの貢献を大切にします。神様は、抑圧されてきた人々、あるいは今抑圧されている人々に、より深い愛を注いでおられると信じます。だから、恵みと公義の福音に生きるように、神様と共に働きます。学校というコミュニティーにあって、生徒たちが正しいことには毅然と支持し、間違っていることには堂々と反論できる者へと成長するよう、語るべきことは語り、しっかりと原則と概念を教育して行くことを約束します。皆様にはぜひ、私たちのために、また、私たちと共に祈ってください。今この世が切実に必要としている真実、正義、平和、そして愛を、私たちこそが忠実にもたらす者となることができますように。
Responding to Racism

As the Head of School at CAJ, I sometimes struggle with what it means to speak for an organization. As I think about CAJ as a school founded by missions, located in Japan, accredited in America, filled with students who are from many different ethnicities with a very strong Japanese influence, it is challenging to know what issues to emphasize and where to take a stand. Recently, some alumni who care deeply for CAJ reached out to me, wondering where CAJ stood on issues related to race and racism. As a school filled with students from many nations, I'm sure we had reassured ourselves, perhaps naively, that this was an issue outside our walls. We were wrong. We have needed to listen and learn, and we entirely agree that none of us is completely untouched by the sins of racism. This has prompted me again to look at both the past and the present, and to also look within, and to try to express how we, as a school, can be agents of reconciliation and hope.
We lament the history of racism and separation that has tragically been part of organized Christianity over centuries. We acknowledge that the desire to share the gospel was all too often focused more on sharing a cultural interpretation of God's Word than it was on proclaiming -- and living -- God's good news of his love for all people, for his perfect justice, and for freedom. We understand that mission work around the world has sometimes been connected with systems of racism, oppression, and colonialism. We have not always taken God's call seriously, "to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8, New International Version).
We value truth at CAJ, even when telling the truth means exposing the evil that lies within us and within our history. The truth is that racism is evil, and we denounce it. "We repent of the ways that we as Christians have far too often failed to adequately stand against the evil of racism and violence: diminishing its severity, averting our gazes, and even perpetuating such injustice deliberately or complicitly" (Redeemer Church).
It is not enough to be passively multi-cultural; we must actively seek for peace, promote justice, and bring healing and transformation. We believe that we are uniquely positioned to do that as we "equip students to serve Japan and the world for Christ."
The fact that God created all humans in his image reminds us that all humans are worthy of dignity and respect, transcending race, color, language and gender. Furthermore, the saving work of Jesus tears down the walls of hostility that divide us. As Paul expressed in his letter to the Galatians, "There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ" (3:28). We look forward to the time we will fully experience this, when an uncountable mass of people "from every nation, tribe, people and language" will stand before the throne of Jesus and sing his praises (Rev. 7:9). We acknowledge that our world is not the way God intends it to be, while we also long for God's "kingdom to come" and for his "will to be done" (Matt. 6:10). We want to make the spaces we occupy: the CAJ campus, the city of Tokyo, and the world we touch, safe places of refuge and acceptance for anyone.
We believe we are designed for community. We value diversity, believing that we reflect God and glorify him better when we are together, and we appreciate the unique contributions of each community member. We also believe that God has a special love for those who have been, or who are being, oppressed; and that he calls us to cooperate in his work of living the gospel of grace and justice. As a school community, we commit to telling the stories and teaching the principles and concepts that will equip our students to stand for what is right and stand against what is wrong. We invite our broader community to pray with us and for us, that we may be faithful agents of truth, justice, peace and love in a world that desperately needs these qualities.
