誠実にいたわる者

“Caretaker”という言葉を聞いて思い浮かぶイメージは、例えば、ゴミを拾う、ゴミを分別する、水を節約する、緑化のために植樹をする、そういうたぐいです。地球を大切にし、いたわるという観点から言えば、もちろんこれらのことは環境のために人が実際にできることであって、素晴らしいことです。しかし、誠実にいたわる、ということはただ単に地球環境を気遣うことだけにとどまりません。これは、私たちが自分自身を愛する、人を愛する、そして周りの環境を愛することです。それは神さまから与えられている私たちのアイデンティティそのものです。くしくも生徒たちがクラスディスカッションで言ったように、誠実にいたわるとは、自分よりも他人を優先し、神さまから与えられたものに感謝し、大切にすることです。つきつめていうと、神さまを信じ、神さまに信仰を持つことにつながります。
ところが残念なことに、いつもこのようにとらえられているとは言えません。私たちは神様が与えてくださる恵みを、自分で得たものだと考えてしまう傾向を持っています。「これは自分の力で得た。自分にとってふさわしい。これは自分のものだ。」と思っているとき、誠実にいたわる者としての基盤が失われています。神さまのことが抜け落ちてしまっています。神さまの力、神さまの知恵、神さまからの語りかけを、自分の人生から取り除いてしまっています。造られたものを管理する権威が人に与えられていても（創世記2:15）、地とその中にあるものすべては神のものであって私たちのものではありません。詩篇24:1にこうあります。「地とそこに満ちているもの。世界とその中に住んでいるもの。それは主のもの。」
すべて（自分を含めて）は神さまのものであり、神さまのものを人は管理するように任せられているにすぎないことを理解すれば、私たちは所有者ではなく、管理者であることに気づかされます。これこそが、誠実にいたわる者であることの意味なのです！神さまによって与えられたアイデンティティーをしっかりと理解し委ねるなら、主の尽きることのない力と恵みを受け取って私たちは変わります。神さまは、私たちの生き方も、隣人も、そしてこの世界全体も、驚くべき方向へと変えてくださるのです。
私たちは声を反響する者ではなく、むしろ声を発する者です。アイデンティティーをしっかりとつかんで、御国のビジョンに向かって一歩を踏み出しましょう。私たちは誠実にいたわる者です！
Faithful Caretakers

Upon hearing the word “caretaker,” one may immediately conjure up images of someone picking up litter, segregating trash, conserving water, or planting trees. Though these are indeed wonderful and tangible expressions of how people can show their love and care for the earth, being faithful caretakers transcends the confines of simply being environmentally-concerned individuals. It is a God-given identity that behooves us to have active love for ourselves, for others, and for the world around us. As my students put it in a class discussion, a faithful caretaker is someone who puts others above him/herself, appreciates and nurtures what God has given, and, ultimately, believes and has faith in God.
Unfortunately, things don’t always play out that way. We have a natural propensity to revert to an ownership viewpoint over everything we’re blessed with. Having the mindset of “I earn this, I deserve this. This is mine,” we shut God out, and this is not the basis of being a faithful caretaker. We end up eliminating God - His power, wisdom and calling - in our living! There is value in recognizing that, though we are given authority over all creation (Genesis 2:15), the truth remains that the earth and everything within it is God’s, not ours. As Psalm 24:1 reminds us, “The earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness, The world and those who dwell therein.”
When we understand that everything (including ourselves) belongs to God and that we are appointed to manage His resources, ownership ends and stewardship begins. This is what it means to become faithful caretakers! When we recognize and submit fully into the identity that God has designed us to have, we cause ourselves to be under the fountain of His overflowing power and blessings that can do amazing transformations in our lives, to our neighbors, and to our world as a whole.
We don’t have to be an echo. We have to be a voice! Let’s behold this identity and step up to heaven's vision for our life. We are faithful caretakers!
教育目標の見直しについて

CAJの教育目標は、私たちが、CAJの児童生徒にどのような人になって欲しいのかを明確に表現するもので、全てのカリキュラムとプログラムの選択の基準となっています。この教育目標は、学校の方向性を決める大切な鍵でもあります。学校改善の継続的なプロセスにとって重要なことの一つは、定期的に教育目標を見直すことです。私たちが児童生徒に望むことと教育目標が一致しているか、明確にそれを表現しているかを確認しなければいけません。
2018年の学校認定調査の際、CAJはこの教育目標がどのように「グローバルコンピテンシー」と「21世紀のスキル」と関連づけられているかを考え直す必要があると感じました。学校認定機関の職員は、「グローバルコンピテンシー」とは、グローバルで多様化された世界とどのように関わり生きていくのか、ということを表している、と定義してくれました。「21世紀のスキル」とは、将来の職場で成功するために必要なスキルを表す言葉で、特に、創造性、革新性、そしてデザイン性を表しています。
この２年間、各科目の部長と指導教員たちが定期的に会議を行い、教育目標を見直して来ました。グローバルコンピテンシーと21世紀のスキルとは何かを調べ、学校のヴィジョン「日本と世界でキリストに仕える生徒を育成する」との関連性を考え、現在の教育目標を修正すべきかを検討しました。
結果は、CAJの現在の教育目標 - 自覚を持って学ぶ、考えて判断する、積極的に協力する、優れたコミュニケーター、誠実にいたわる - はCAJが児童生徒に望むものをうまく捉えているというものでした。でも２つ変更したいことがありました。
一つは、「誠実にいたわる者」をリストの先頭に持ってきたことです。神様は人に対して目的を持っておられます。「誠実にいたわる者」はその目的に対する深いキリスト教の理解を示しており、「誠実にいたわる者」を先頭に置くことにより、それに続く他の教育目標に意味と意義を与えます。私たちは児童生徒が、例えば、責任を持つこと、協力して結果を生み出すことを学び、誠実にいたわる者としての神様から与えられた責任を果たすことを望んでいるのです。
次に、それぞれの教育目標を説明する記述を訂正しました。それにより、それぞれの意味がより明確になり、グローバルコンピテンシーと21世紀のスキルにどのように繋がっていくのかが明確になりました。例えば、「積極的な協力者」の記述は「他の人と効果的に働く」というものです。この記述を明確にし、より意義あるものとするために、「尊敬、創造性、そして柔軟性を促進する建設的な環境を造る」に訂正しました。
教育目標の順番を変えることにより、学習全般の目的を強調することができました。また同時に、改定した記述は、グローバルな世界との関わり方、多様性を感謝しつつ柔軟性を保つこと、自ら忍耐を持ち学習すること、そして美を尊重し、追求していくことを大切にしています。この後のブログもそれぞれの教育目標を取り上げて行きます。それにより、CAJの教育を導いて行く重要な方針をより明確に示したいと願っています。
Revisiting our Student Objectives

CAJ’s student objectives articulate who we want our students to become, shaping every curriculum and program choice. Because of the key role that our objectives play in guiding our school, an important aspect of our ongoing school improvement process is regular review of our student objectives to ensure that they match and clearly express what we desire for our students.
Through our 2018 accreditation review, CAJ saw the need to consider how our student objectives connect to “Global Competencies” and “21st-Century Skills.” “Global Competencies,” as defined by our accrediting agency, are the skills widely recognized as important for navigating and engaging in diverse contexts in a globalized world. “21st-Century Skills” is a common term for the skills needed for success in tomorrow’s workplace, with a special focus on creativity, innovation, and design.
Over the course of the past two academic years, a group of department heads and other teacher leaders met regularly to review our student objectives. We studied Global Competencies and 21st-Century Skills, considered how they might connect to our school vision of equipping students to serve Japan and the world for Christ, and assessed whether our existing student objectives needed revision in light of these connections.
We concluded that CAJ’s existing student objectives – responsible learners, discerning thinkers, productive collaborators, effective communicators, and faithful caretakers – continue to capture what CAJ wants for its students, although with two modifications.
First, we moved “faithful caretakers” to the beginning of the list in order to highlight how this objective, rooted in our Christian understanding of God’s purpose for humanity, provides the context within which the other objectives find their meaning and significance. We want students to learn responsibly and collaborate productively, for example, in order to fulfill their God-given role of faithful caretaking.
Second, we revised the descriptive phrases connected to each student objective to communicate more clearly what each objective means and, as appropriate, how it might connect to Global Competencies and 21st-Century Skills. One of the existing descriptors of “productive collaborators,” for example, was “Work effectively with others.” Seeking to clarify and deepen this descriptor, we rephrased it to read, “Create a positive environment that encourages respect, creativity, and flexibility.”
The reordered list of objectives newly emphasizes the purpose of all learning. At the same time, the revised descriptors highlight the themes of global engagement, appreciation for and engagement with diversity, initiative and perseverance in learning, and the valuing and pursuit of beauty. We hope that upcoming blog posts focusing on each student objective will further illuminate these important principles that guide our education at CAJ!
